Production Tips and Tricks Podcast

Power Intro Samples via Music Radio Creative

We briefly mention soundalike jingles in this episode and refer to power intros as an example. A power intro is an acapella created to match a certain music music. The trick in there is you are selling an acapella and not the music which is very clear in our terms and conditions. Whenever you purchase music or audio make sure you do your research and you have the right to play the music.

What Product Saved Apple? | Cult of Mac

"So which single product put Apple back on the path to success?

Final Cut Pro —  because it was a playground for a lot of UI experimentation that became important later. (Brody)

OS X — The operating system that’s the foundation of all the hit products, from the iMac to the iPad. (Morin)

PowerBook 100 — the first great design of Apple’s new era (Ganatra)

iPod — the product that changed everything (Brunner) iPhone — a huge revolution in computing (Grignon and Esslinger)

iTunes on Windows — because that blew the doors open.

The Apple Stores — they made Apple accessible to the great public (Max Chafkin, the moderator)."

Apocalypse Radio, The Real 'Comic Book Men'

Charlie Steele and Shaman are just two guys from Kentucky that should sue the producers of 'Comic

Book Men' for stealing their show idea. Well, Louisville and Lexington actually,,,, they are full blown Geek, Nerd, Broadcast pros knocking out a few podcast episodes in their free time. They don't talk about it a whole lot but you can tell they are in the broadcast industry because they have always had excellent sound.

Charlie
Shaman
These are probably the only two people in the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky that could give a flying crap less about UK/UL rivalries or sports results. They are comic book, SciFi and Horror nerds. If you want to hear two good long time friends get together and talk about "Stuff" you found the show. For the sound quality alone the show is worth following just to figure out what they are using.

Accidental Tech Podcast, Catchy Song...

You must subscribe to this podcast if just for the theme song. These guys did not ask for or write the intro but they use it because the writer gave them something worth thousands of dollars. A nice simple catchy song that is clean and will play in your head all day. The crew swings wildly from intricately detailed reviews of obscure developer applications to the most recent Miley-Twerk sightings. Give this show a few listens and you will soon be wondering when the next episode is coming.

CRACKED Podcast

From Cracked.com, the funniest and snarkiest site on the internet, is the CRACKED podcast. This podcast is still young but the writing team at Cracked brings its brand of humor to the intertubes on an irregular basis. Known for their lists and suggestions articles these guys have a strange sense of humor and a weirdly familiar take on the daily news. It is worth a listen and quite possibly the cost of a subscription. FREE!!!

Dave Dameshek Football Podcast

The Dave Dameshek Football Podcast and Blog is an officially produced NFL product so he has access to the Coaches, Players and new makers from all around the league. An admitted fan of football since at least last year Dave is actually the author and ring leader of some really great analysis. DD likes old school grimy football, tailgating indigestion and swapping TurDucken Recipes with John Madden. His 'N if L' series of videos are my favorites so far. The podcast will go into overdrive now that football has started but even in the off season he punches at least one hour long episode a week.

Subscribe to the Dave Dameshek Football Program on iTunes.

Dave Dameshek discusses Miley Cyrus, Ben Affleck's Batman and Rex Ryan tantrums along with some talk about a little sport called football.

Chairborne Commando, Military News and Opinion from the Front

In military jargon a "Chairborne Commando" is a person that served in a low level position with little danger, lots of laziness, much malingering and a whole lot of "Expert Opinion". In between extended visits to the TMC and TDY assignments to CFLIC these folks pick up just enough jargon and third person war stories to score a few free beers at the local bar back in the states. However, once amongst real warriors and true soldiers their POG abilities and constant excuses quickly earn them "Chairborne" status. This podcast is not for them but in spite of them.

The CBC podcast is a down to earth podcast by, for and about US military operations, expenditures and news of note. It runs a bit long but the best stuff, just like a Go-Bag, is front loaded for easy access.
Hear is an episode for your preview.

Podcast Patent Lawsuit Update and Debate

Personal Audio’s founder Jim Logan created and patented an idea which, in his eyes, covers the concept of podcasting. “This is the story of the American inventor,” Richard Baker, Personal Audio’s vice president of licensing, says. Personal Audio has filed lawsuits against several podcasters and media companies, claiming patent infringement by popular programs such as NBC’s The Adam Carolla Show and by CBS for its podcast distribution of multiple shows including The Voice and Meet the Press.

On the other side, The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has spearheaded a campaign dubbed “Save Podcasting!” to rescind Personal Audio’s patent. EFF’s goal is to revoke Personal Audio’s right to compensation from any podcast program. Daniel Nazer, a staff attorney working on the campaign, represents EFF on the program.

On this edition of Lawyer2Lawyer Bob Ambrogi and J. Craig Williams talk with Richard Baker and Brad Liddle, Personal Audio’s president of licensing, and Daniel Nazer of EFF to hear their thoughts on what defines a patent troll, the specifics behind the cases, and more.

History Podcast Review, "The British History Podcast"

Have you ever wanted to know what the British Isles were really like back before the Empire? Jamie's
podcast covers it from the earliest formation of the islands through the middle ages. This is a great podcast that really should be listened to from the beginning.

The British History Podcast. Download it here.

"The British History Podcast is a chronological telling of the story of Britain. I started in the Ice Age, and I’ve been steadily moving forward ever since. The focus of this podcast is upon the human drama that is played out in history. Rather than providing a dry recount of dates and names, I am doing my best to provide a three dimensional image of what these people, places, and events were like. The people I’m speaking about were real flesh and blood individuals with dreams, fears, and flaws. And where the information is available, I intend to highlight those aspects for you. Recently the podcast has been featured on iTunes, was a Finalist for Best Educational Podcast in 2012 by The Podcast Awards, was recommended by the Portland Mercury and Medievalists.net, and is currently a contributor to Anglotopia.net."

Game of Thrones Podcast: "Cast Of Thrones"

If you thought the hit HBO series was intricate just wait until this happy group of Harvard educated fans tear each episode apart. The Cast of Thrones is hosted by Nick Barstow, Jennifer Cheek, Mike Dao and a rotating crew of "Usurpers". The Cast of Thrones has been in continuous weekly production for over 2 years and shows no sign of slowing down. I honestly feel like they record the show in period authentic attire while sharpening their authentic long swords drinking hot spiced wine. They review the series, the books, the spin offs and rip offs and dissect them with the precious of a Predator drone strike. My favorite part is the Book Club  submissions but they have suspended reviewing the novels until the series catches up. There are just too many spoilers and disappointments when you read ahead.

"Cast of Thrones", a podcast dedicated to the world  of Westros created by George RR Martin.

Small Business Entrepreneurship Podcast Review "StartUps"

Mike Taber and Rob Walling have over 20 years of experience as software entrepreneurs that focus on individual and app start up businesses. They have launched many small business and app development projects with varying degrees of success. Their podcast is a weekly update on their individual projects, favorite links and success stories from listeners. While these two are software developers the bumps, hurdles, pivots and paychecks they share each week should be informative for individual and small business listeners.

The podcast is an extension of their Micropreneur Academy that helps both developers and non-techies go from zero to launch in 6 months.

My favorite bits are when the discuss the up and downs of using Virtual Assistants, contract developers and off site support services. If you have a great idea for an iPhone or Android app and are considering going it alone you need to check out a few episodes of "Start Ups For The Rest Of Us."

'Hardcore History", Dan Carlin gets a thumbs up.

Since 2006 Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" has dived deep into pivotal points in human history. Originally aimed at the history nerds this podcast is not for everyone. However, if you want an intriguing take on historical Tipping Points, "Great Men of History" and the true long term cost of the human condition this podcast is a must listen. As a former Radio Host and reporter Dan Carlin has a great voice and tells his tales in a way that grabs even a passive listener.

This podcast is long and may take several sessions to get through but it is well worth an extra lap around the parking lot.....

Top Ten Podcasts on iTunes and why

Here is your competition.
If you are a budding podcast producer, with ambitions of replacing Howard Stern as the King of All Media, a  you should pay attention to a few things on the list below. Traditional broadcast media has finally gotten the word that podcasting is the Bomb. They are steadily taking over most of the categories in iTunes with canned versions of their on-air broadcasts. Take heart though, the beauty of the internet is the fact that podcast listeners "Choose" what programs they subscribe, download and consume.

Networking:
With the exception of Adam Carolla everyone of these shows have the backing of a large media outlet. They leverage the power and prestige of their parent network's status as high quality content producers. Six of the top ten shows on iTunes are public radio properties. Carolla's podcast popularity stems from his comedy career, politically incorrectness and positioning as a Pirate Ship in a sea of mediocrity. Dennis Miller is another comedian with a sharp wit and something to say about our society that people like to hear.

Quality:
Every single one of these shows are professionally produced with excellent sound quality and offered in high bit-rate compression formats. They are not sitting in their bedroom closet recording Skype calls. They have great production values and a trained broadcast sound engineer bringing the show together.

Preparation:
Hint, even the three or four supposedly "Free Form" shows have producers, ADs, interns and show runners doing the grunt work. Somebody has to do the research, dig up phone numbers and arrange interviews. Everyone of these shows has a script, call sheet, live reads, compliance logs, etc... these all have to be maintained by someone.

Funding:
Each and every show listed below is recorded and produced with equipment and facilities costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Most of the hosts and talent is on a salary generated by the shows. Serving up the millions of weekly downloads costs thousands of dollars a month. So who pays these bills? Well NPR is publicly funded through tax deductible grants and donations. The rest sell advertising the same way broadcast media does. As a matter of fact ad agencies actually love podcast ads because they can track views, downloads, subscriptions for their clients. Broadcast media can really only guess.

Now for the Good, no Great News about average joe podcasting. By choosing the right niche, good content and providing a decent sound quality you can be heard.

Stay tuned for more insanely great insight and opinions about podcasts and podcasting culture here at PodcastBingo.net.
